Love Where You Live

Welcome to my latest blog!

As I’m sure you are all aware litter is a serious problem in our city. Over the last few months litter has been putting Cardiff in the headlines for all the wrong reasons.  It makes the city look ugly and attracts pests such as rats and seagulls.  Litter in our streets also has a negative effect on the quality of life for our residents.

We’ve thought long and hard about what to do to tackle this problem. And I’m pleased to say that last week saw the launch of our new campaign Love Where You Live.  A key part will be saying thank you to residents who have formed litter-picking groups and come out to help us keep Cardiff tidy.  They are our unsung heroes and we appreciate the work they do and the time they give up.  So how are we going to thank them?  Well by putting them up in lights on giant billboards across the city and on buses and bus stops.

This campaign is city-wide and as well as thanking those residents it will tackle the problem of litter from five different angles:

  1. A zero-tolerance approach to littering
  2. Raise awareness of recycling
  3. Neighbourhood blitzes
  4. Student education
  5. Harnessing people power

The key message though is that litter is caused by the thoughtless actions of a few. If we can encourage those few to change their habits and love where they live, then we can make a real difference to our city.

For more information on the Love Where You Live campaign including how to get involved or even to nominate a deserving litter-picker and receive a thank you from the city council, please visit the brand-new website www.keepcardifftidy.com and take a look at our campaign video and billboard pictures.
